What Are Milia Sandwich and Why Do They Develop?
Milia are tiny, firm, white or yellowish cysts that form when keratin, a protein naturally found in the skin, becomes trapped beneath its surface. They commonly appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose and forehead.
Unlike ordinary spots, milia Sandwich do not usually have an opening through which their contents can be squeezed. Trying to pop them may leave the surrounding skin sore or damaged without removing the bump.
Milia can develop at any age. Sometimes there is no obvious cause, while other cases are associated with skin damage, blistering or certain skin procedures. They are not usually a sign of poor hygiene.
A few things worth knowing about milia:
- Some disappear naturally, while others remain for months or longer.
- They are generally harmless and do not always need treatment.
- Not every small white bump is milia; other skin conditions can look similar.
- Picking or scraping the bumps can irritate the skin and increase the risk of scarring.
If you are unsure what a bump is, have it assessed before considering removal. The right approach depends on identifying the lesion correctly.
